Jim Sullivan has over 20 years of experience in HVDC power transmission technology with one of the Northeast's largest electric utilities. During this time he gained extensive experience in the areas of control room operations, substation maintenance, safety compliance, environmental regulations and recent NERC reliability standards. Jim started his career with New England Electric System (NEES) as a Network Supervisor at the Sandy Pond HVDC Terminal. In this role, he developed operating procedures, site procedures and custom computer applications for operations. He was part of the commissioning team for the world's first HVDC multi-terminal interconnection working closely with Hydro-Quebec, ISO-NE, System Control Centers and HVDC engineering personnel. He also participated in various engineering projects relating to the HVDC control systems. Later, as Manager/Director of HVDC O&M with National Grid, Jim was responsible for the budgeting, operations, maintenance and compliance of both HVDC Terminals of the HQ/New England Interconnection in the USA. His management responsibilities included working closely with the HVDC network asset owners, Hydro-Quebec, ISO-NE and National Grid upper management to support the numerous service and operating agreements. During this time, he participated in the project management of several multi-million dollar electrical and facility related projects. Recent accomplishments include a lead role in a NERC Reliability Standards gap analysis and remediation which led to the successful NPCC audit of the holding companies representing the Phase II HVDC Interconnection. This work included requirements of Transmission Owner, Transmission Operator and CIP compliance. Jim also helped support other National Grid HVDC projects worldwide. As a separate undertaking from National Grid, he assisted the commissioning team on the Cross Sound Cable HVDC interconnection from Connecticut to Long Island. Jim has extensive training and experience in all aspects of operations, maintenance and compliance combined with a diverse knowledge of HVDC power transmission. He has recently joined EIG to utilize his knowledge and experience to provide a wide range of services to the high voltage electric transmission and generation disciplines.
