Peter W. Jeans - Principal Engineer

Peter Jeans has spent nearly 40 years in the power transmission and distribution (T&D) business at one of the Northeast’s largest utilities (National Grid USA).  During that period of time, he held a variety of positions with increasing responsibility in engineering, operations, and management of many facets of the T&D industry. These experiences have given Peter a solid background in critical facets of the constantly evolving electric utility business.

During his early career at National Grid USA (formally the New England Electric System), Peter worked in distribution field engineering, designing and upgrading overhead and underground facilities. In addition to his engineering assignments, he was also involved in outage restoration. In this position, he became very familiar with substation and distribution facilities and their operation.

With Peter’s Distribution experience, he progressed to a supervisory position in T&D Work Methods & Training where he developed distribution construction and maintenance practices in accordance with OSHA regulations.  In this position, Peter gained a great deal of experience as a trainer, developing training material and training Linemen and others in these work practices. Peter was also responsible for the updating and development of transmission line maintenance practices which were used in the maintenance of 115kV, 345kV and 450kV DC transmission lines throughout National Grid’s territory.

Later Peter moved on to National Grids System Control Center, initially as an operator and eventually progressing to Supervisor and finally Manager of the Control Center. As Manager, Peter was responsible for overseeing the daily operation and security of a system that encompassed 150 substations and provided power to over 500,000 customers. Peter has extensive experience in the operation of a diverse generation mix and transmission voltages. He has a solid understanding of generation patterns and transmission load flows.  In addition, Peter is well versed in system restoration and the power market.

Before retiring from National Grid, Peter became involved in a $50M project to install computers and GPS systems in service and line vehicles.  As the lead for Business Enablement and Training group, he and his staff developed communication and training material and trained over 1200 field workers and support staff in New York and New England.

Peter holds a Bachelor of Science Degree in Industrial Engineering and Associates Degree in Electrical Engineering from Merrimack College.
