Michael E. Rook - Consulting Engineer

Michael Rook's expertise covers a broad range of experience in the electric utility and engineering consulting industries.  He has a spent the last 28 years of his career in the utility industry with the most recent 26 years at one of the largest electric utilities in the northeast.  Prior to this effort, he spent six years in the engineering consulting business with a nationally ranked company.  These experiences give Michael a solid background in the engineering and project management of constructing large facility, generation and hydroelectric projects.

Michael began his career at O’Brien & Gere Engineers as an engineer responsible for the implementation and management of Sewer System Evaluation Surveys on the Metropolitan Sewage Districts of Syracuse, NY and Philadelphia, PA.   Additional assignments included performing HEC-II in stream flow modeling for Flood Insurance Studies in 16 Pennsylvania communities including final report preparation and community presentations, hydroelectric feasibility and water resource studies, and Phase I and II dam inspections.  Michael next worked for the Massachusetts Municipal Wholesale Electric Company, initially supporting the development of eight hydroelectric sites.  In a subsequent position, he conducted power supply planning studies which served as the decision basis for acquiring reliable cost-effective energy.

In the fall of 1982, Michael joined the New England Electric System (now National Grid US) initially providing civil engineering and project management support for projects associated with the company’s 16 hydroelectric stations and three fossil power plants.  Projects ranged from economic feasibility studies, benefit-cost analyses, risk assessments, inspections, managing construction projects, unit overhauls, restoration work and the negotiation of property tax agreements.  Following this effort was an assignment in the Fuel Department, which required managing the coal ash recycling process and contracts, marketing of the beneficial material and proper disposal of the remaining bi-products.

The next five years with National Grid, Michael managed the Property Assets Department with responsibility for overseeing the system’s transmission and distribution real estate assets through oversight of the 11 real estate representatives and two attorneys.  The most recent four years were spent managing the company’s facility leases and capital improvement budgets, totaling approximately $11M and $23M, respectively, with a staff of eight designers/engineers.

Michael holds a Bachelor of Science Degree in Civil Engineering from Syracuse University and is a Registered Professional Engineer in NY, VT, RI, MA, and NH, as well as being a MA Dept. of Environmental Protection Certified Title 5 System Inspector.  Michael is also a member of the Clara Barton Camp for Diabetic Girls Board of Directors and is on the Camp’s Facilities Committee.
